Have you been in a recent motor vehicle accident? Stuck on what you need to do next? As your Denver Chiropractor, I’m here to help.
Immediately after the motor vehicle accident
Exchange information with the other driver involved. Write down their address, phone number, work number, email, license plate, make, model, color, driver’s license number, registration with expiration, automobile insurance carrier, policy number, date and time. If witnesses are present, collect their contact information as well. This can help protect you if there is any doubt of who is at fault.
With technology at our fingertips, take pictures of everything, their documents, damages to your car, damages to their car, the intersection, any tire skid marks and the position of your headrest and passengers headrest.
Again, if you are injured I recommend going to the emergency room or urgent care. This will protect you if there is any underlying injuries you may not be currently aware.
Within a few hours, the next day or two
Contact your automobile insurance company about the accident. They will work with you to create a case file on the accident. This is an important step in the process. You will need a case number moving forward for medical care and retaining any legal counsel.
Contact and schedule an appointment with a Medical Doctor or Chiropractor who is familiar with injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. You don’t want to wait a week or a month before you meet with a Physician for an examination and assessment. In most cases, the Physician will work directly with your auto insurance company. Colorado law requires Medical Pay (MedPay) on all automobile insurance policies (since January 2009) to protect drivers and their passengers with immediate medical expenses from a motor vehicle accident. MedPay has a 5,000 dollar limit for each occupant in the car, so even if an occupant does not personally have health insurance they are still covered.
Contact legal counsel who is familiar with automotive accidents. They will assist you on whether or not you need representation. Your Medical Doctor or Denver Chiropractor may have a couple of references to get you started. This is also a very important step in the process. Insurance companies, even your own automobile insurance (not all insurance companies) sometimes like to give you and your medical practitioners ‘the run around’ when it comes to your case and paying your medical expenses. If you have legal representation, the process seems to move a little more smoothly and keeps you focused on your injuries and getting back to pre-accident condition.
